Email Cleaning Utilities

eCleaner -- From Simtel. Do you forward your favorite e-mail jokes to all your friends? Your wit will be better appreciated if it doesn't arrive with ">>>>>" at the beginning of every line. This nifty little program removes them from e-mail messages, making them look cleaner and preventing choppy word wraps. Now if only it made the jokes funny.    eCleaner, is also available from    AnswersThatWork.

emailStripper -- A free program for cleaning the ">" and other formatting characters out of your emails. It will restore "forwarded" or "replied" emails back to their original state so they're easier to read.

StripMail -- A freeware utility that strips the characters ">" and "|" from forwarded e-mails, formats the text into paragraphs, making it easier to read, changes the text's right margin, by indenting, can be used with any e-mail client.

eFilter -- Copy the text you want to filter, paste it into the eFilter's window, and eFilter automatically rips out all those ">"s so you don't have to. Then, you need only copy and paste the filtered text into a new e-mail.

Free E-Mail Cleaner -- From the author Steve Chin: "This is for those of you who distribute a lot of jokes. I got tired of cleaning up all of the Unix reply marks ('>') and the lines that got chopped up by multiple word-wrapping. So, I decided to write up a really quick application that does all of this for you." Download hosted by Ron Brandon. This utility is also hosted on the personal site of Gavin in South Africa

StripEm -- Forwarded email always has a bunch of >>>'s in them making it hard to read the message. StripEm removes all those characters from emails as well as any other character you choose.

UnReply -- Text Cleaning Utility for Windows.

Other Email Resources

ERC -- A free email redirecting utility that retrieves mail from one pop3 account (V1.09 supports up to 99 pop accounts) and redirects the mail to another pop3 account. ERC does not require you to have a domain name. For example, you could use it to redirect mail from your home account to your work account or visa versa.

Free Email Providers Guide -- Has re-launched with new features. Now users can search the listings of 1200 free email providers from 85 countries. Users are guided through a process to choose an ideal email provider that has the features they need. Fepg has also broadened their services to include free fax, free voicemail, free long distance calls and other free services.

TalkSender -- Easily add audio to your email. Free, really small, light, easy and fast. 1 minute is all it takes from the time you click on the "download" button til when you're sending voice messages to anyone on the internet. There's no setup or configuration involved. It allows anyone, right from the desktop, in 3 simple steps, to:
1)speak into the microphone.
2)pick a recipient.
3)send a voice message.
your recipients need nothing extra to listen to your messages. They hear it right away when they open your message, and you need a sound card and speakers, but if you don't have a microphone, don't worry, they are giving away free microphones too.

Email Scanner -- This little utility for Win95 and above scans through emails and extracts all the email addresses. These can be output to a text file, either line separated or separated by semicolons so it can be pasted into the "To" box of your mail client.

Mailbag Assistant -- This is a powerful and user-friendly program for Windows that compliments your email software. This utility will help you view your mailboxes, find messages quickly, group emails, and archive them. It's especially designed for people who receive and keep large amounts of email, but is also useful to anyone having difficulty organizing their messages, searching for old emails, and archiving their correspondence. It currently reads Eudora, Netscape Messenger, Outlook Express4 (OE4 Only), Pegasus, The Bat!, FoxMail, Calypso and Agent mailboxes. Support for other mailbox formats is planned for future versions of the program.

Dawn Wizard -- This makes converting address books easier than ever. The days of manual exports and imports are over. Most major email programs, including Netscape, Outlook, Eudora, Pegasus and more are now supported directly. In literally five clicks the addresses are seamlessly moved from here to there. Dawn converts a list of email addresses to various formats of address books. It also sorts email addresses by nickname or email address. Dawn is available for Windows 95/98/NT and UNIX systems.

Eudora Pro -- Now free! Qualcomm now offers their popular email client software as "Adware". That means it's free to use, but in exchange you will see small ads in the lower corner of the software.

IncrediMail -- This is another free email client that's getting rave revues from most of it's users. Vinette DePhillipe, for example, who is a regular contributor to our ezine uses it and thinks very highly of it.

MailTo-Encrypter -- A freeware product that has been especially designed to stop spam. It can be used to 'encrypt' your email address, so that the spammer's tool can't grab it from your website. The email address is still displayed correctly in your browser and the mailto-tag is also still working correctly. Editor's Note: MailToEncrypter converts ordinary text to ASCII codes which many web spiders are, unfortunately, able to read. I've located two sites which have online conversion tools capable of converting a string of text, or HTML code into a javascript which offers a better protection. The first, and least complicated, is located on the website of Neil Kitching and the second, quite sophisticated is available from Hiveware.   I've had very good success with both of these.

Slugmail -- Free, easy help with email overload. This service lets you set up a reminder message that you can receive on any day you want. You can send a reminder to: monday@slugmail.Com, tue@slugmail.Com, 21sep@slugmail.Com, etc. It's easy, it's free. No membership charges, registration, or junk advertising. It works with any email program, operating system, or type of email account. You don't need to install any software on your system. No 'cookies' are deposited on your system. Examples: if you receive an email that you would rather deal with next Thursday morning, just forward it to "thursday@slugmail.com" or for you Spanish speakers 'jueves@slugmail.com'. If you want to remember to follow up on an email that you send, just Cc it to slugmail. they will return the message on the day you select. All seven days of the week are supported, plus 'tomorrow', in english and spanish.

epAssist -- Personal assistant. Control your pc via email. Imagine your machine at work being watched by your trusted personal assistant. You could be at home, on the job site, in a hotel, or emailing through your palmtop. Have your assistant send you your unread email, save a document on your hard drive, and then print it out on the company printer. The assistant communicates to you and you to it through email. Requests such as 'please send unread messages' or 'please send me this file' can be handled. Note: The free version is somewhat crippled in features but nevertheless funtional.

You're welcome to visit and try the service out, but by doing so you understand that it may or may not behave as you (or I) expect, and that it may go away at any time. Editor's note: This service has been online for over a year as I write this comment (9-8-03).

Email Alias Addresses:   An alias is simply an address that automatically forwards to another address which you've specified.   An alias has no "In Box" nor can you send mail from an alias address, however it can be very useful on those occasions when you must give an email address online and don't wish to risk compromising your primary address.   When an alias address becomes compromised (by spammers) you can contact the provider and ask them to delete it from their system, simultaneously requesting a new alias giving you a fresh start while keeping your primary address protected from spammers.   I've found several sites that offer free email aliases and have winnowed the list down to two providers who I'm willing to trust.   Since you must provide them with a valid email address, to which the alias will forward, it becomes necessary to trust them, however, any address is subject to becoming compromised by spammers and you should never hesitate to change your primary email address once it becomes compromised.   Don't tolerate spam.   Yes, it's a pain to notify all your friends, and change all your subscriptions but it's well worth the trouble when the alternative is to receive an ever growing amount of unwanted junk email.   When it comes to spam, a firm policy of zero-tolerance is strongly advisable.   Get tough, and complain loudly to your government representatives.   Your efforts can help encourage them to pass laws which can stop spammers in their tracks.   Free alias addresses are available from:
Nite Security.com      &      Speleo.tv

On this site, you'll also find the Mercury Mail Transport System which is a free, standards-based mail server solution, providing comprehensive, fast server support for all major Internet e-mail protocols. It is supplied in two versions, one hosted on Windows systems, the other running as a set of NLMs on Novell NetWare file servers.

Kaufman Mail Warrior -- A user-friendly, small (floppy-size) and fast mail client rich with features like a user-friendly interface with a list of features including address book, multiple signatures, multiple accounts, customizable toolbars, drag-n-drop and HTML viewing capabilities. The developer's site is no longer available however the software is still available on in many places of the web. The link give here is on the Freewareweb.com site and is a good link, as I write this, however links of this type are often short lived. If the link fails when you try it, you can easily find another link by typing the program name ("Kaufman Mail Warrior"), in quotes, into the search window at google and I'd also appreciate your letting me know the link has gone bad so I can find a new one to replace it. You can notify me via our site feedback form.

Pop3 Email: A pop3 email account can be accessed with the email client on your computer ( Outlook Express, Pegasus, Eudora, etc.). Yahoo and Hotmail, for example offer pop3 access to their premium (paid) accounts but if you don't mind having ads tacked onto your email, here are some places where you can acquire a free pop3 account.
FastMail   HotPOP   E-Omninet   SoftHome   MyRealBox   ePOP3.com    digitalme
Tip for free Pop3 accounts:   Let your friends know what's going on by setting up a signature in your ad supported pop3 account, for example:
John Doe
(Forgive the ads. They're the price of this "free" account.)

MailWasher -- A powerful email checker with effective spam elimination.

Sparkingwire.com -- Many sites that offer "free" things want you to give them an email address. Why? So they can send you ads. You can simply decline the freebie, but you also have the option of giving them a valid email address which is nevertheless immune to spam. Sparkingwire addresses are "valid" in that email sent to them isn't bounced, but all email sent to sparkingwire addresses is simply deleted. Nobody ever "receives" it. It's gone forever. You wouldn't want to use this to sign up for information you really do want to receive, but if you simply need an address to get to the "goodies" on a web site, and don't care if you ever hear from them again or not, this is a good solution.
Click on "Enroll Now" to get an address. Enter the name you want and click submit. If the system doesn't tell you that your chosen name is already in use, then you're "good to go". Your spam-proof address will be (the_name_you_used)@sparkingwire.com
Tip: If you open your favorite text editor (like NotePad in windows), type in the new address, and save it to your desktop, or some other convenient location, as "Spam-free address", you'll always be able to find it when you need a safe address to use online.

thatgame -- For centuries chess games have been conducted by mail. Some of those games probably took decades to complete at times in history when it took months for the mail to be delivered from one continent to another. It's only logical then that chess can be played by email, and not surprising that other games can be played by email as well.

Mail This Page -- A utility program for emailing Web Pages or HTML files directly from your Browser. Integrates with Internet Explorer so you can browse, click, and your HTML email appears in Outlook Express. You can also save Web Pages to .eml files, which can be imported into other email clients such as Netscape, Outlook, or Eudora.

Schmaili -- Personally, I hate HTML email, and I especially hate those little smileys, but I know that makes me a member of a minority group, and I want to be fair where possible so I'm listing this. Schmaili allows you to insert funny smiley faces into your emails by a simple mouse click.

MSGTAG -- This free program sends you email notifications when your messages are received and opened by your friends. The eye-catching MSGTAG capsule sits on your desktop or in your system tray, allowing you to enable or disable tagging with one click.

Hotmail Popper -- A small application that allows you to check your Hotmail account e-mail from a normal POP mail client (such as Eudora). Unlike standard mail accounts which allow users to retrieve their e-mail through a POP mail client, Hotmail can normally only be checked on the web, or via Outlook Express. With Hotmail Popper, you can use your favorite POP mail client to retrieve your e-mail from your Hotmail account. In addition, Hotmail Popper allows you to send e-mails through Hotmail's service, as if it was a normal SMTP (outgoing mail) server.

POP3 Scan Mailbox -- A nice utility for anyone who's got several pop3 accounts and would like to simplify checking them.

Habeas -- Offers a service that costs nothing for personal use and can be very useful in protecting you, and others, from unwanted email (spam)

CallCenter -- A free 32-bit, integrated fax, voicemail and data communications application with a simple to use interface providing fax send and receive functionality, basic (single mailbox) answering machine capability, and sophistcated data communications.
