Resources for Musicians and Songwriters

Musicians Resources

Easy Music Theory -- This is a commercial site, but there are several free lessons available online.

Introduction to Reading Music -- This is a nicely done tutorial, written for DataDragon Information Services, by Kevin Lux. The fundamentals of time signatures and basic counting, among other things, are well covered here.

Music theory lesson: time signatures -- There were three pop-ups here; one small one entering, and two that came up on exiting the page, but, the lesson is well written, and worth reading.

Music Notation Reference Guide -- A wealth of information on music notation, key signatures, and time signatures here.

More Time Signatures -- This one is a ThinkQuest page, so you may get their descriptive page, about the project, on entering. Just look for, and click on, the "continue to the page" link. There are three small pages (linked together) here, with some good information on time signatures.

Music Theory -- Another ThinkQuest project (again, you wind up on their descriptive page first - look for, and click on the link that says "continue to the page") with a lot of useful information.

Music Magic -- Still another ThinkQuest page, mainly for piano, but with some nice resources.

Online Music & Math -- Yes, one more ThinkQuest site. The background music didn't play right for me (my system seemed to turn on two players at once, and they were out of sync) but the information was good.

Start Reading Music -- Another very nicely done tutorial with plenty of useful information in a well organized index, so you can go straight to a given subcatagory, like time signatures, or note values(the graphics aren't great, but the material is).

The Music Rack -- The free download page at Sheet Music Online. There's some basic tutorial material here; printable staff paper; even some free sheet music.

A Music Crash Course -- A very good resource. Useful information on several topics.

Dolmetch -- A large site with a lot of free, online resources.

Guitar Theory Resources -- A large index, with sections on musical terms, time signatures, and other topics that aren't specific to any particular instrument, along with plenty of resources for the aspiring, or even the accomplished, guitarist.

HammerHead Rhythm Station -- This is a freeware drum machine. It might be a very useful tool in learning to understand basic rhythms, or for experimenting in home recordings.

Learning World -- From Yamaha. Somewhat limited in scope, but some good information here.

CyberFlotsam -- An interesting web site for several topics, and a terrific music section. Check it out.

MusicAtSchool -- A terrific resource from the UK. Lots of interesting information here, but the excellent online lessons are what got them listed here.

Basic Music Theory -- Here's a site that ought to keep you busy for a few days. Plenty of information, and you can go to considerable depth in any specific area that interests you.

My Sheet Music Lessons -- From mysheetmusic.com. Aimed at keyboard instruments, but with some good generic information too.

Math & Music -- An interesting site and, if you read far enough down, there's some practical, and useful, information here, along with some good links too.

Musical Stuff -- A number of great resources from Gilbert DeBenedetti, who's on the music faculty at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. This is a nicely done web site.

Music Concepts Online -- Created by Jim Lucas, Professor of Music at Northeastern Illinois University. A great online resource.

Basic Music Theory* -- By Larry Konecky Alcorn State University, in Alcorn State, Mississippi. Another great online resource.

Music Fundamentals Workbook -- A few pages of good resources from David Grasmick, Music Profesor at the California State Polytechnic University in Pomona.

Discover Music -- They call them "Fact Sheets" but they amount to tutorials, and good ones too. Plenty of good information here.

Eric Weisstein's Treasure Trove of the Music -- Here's another one that will take a few days if you decide to take an "in depth" approach to the wealth of information that's provided. Great site.

Music Theory Pages -- From from David Ives Musical Services.

Auburn University Department of Music -- In Auburn, Alabama has some nice generic musical information here, along with lots of specific information for horn players.

Lesson Central -- A number of good online lessons from visionmusic.com.

Kitchieboy's Music Tutor -- This site describes itself as being about "Learning to Read Music (But Not Enough to Hurt Your Playing)".

Home Recording Resources

Audio Recording Center -- Good sound advice for the independent music maker. Includes helpful articles, a well organized Links section, and other useful resources.

Echovibes -- A source for sounds, including a nice list of loop tracks usable in creating electronic music.
