Howdy ya'll. It's me again, your happy-go-lucky ezine editor. Welcome
back to the virtual city of Maxpatch, population 1885. *smile* That's
how I think about you all, as a little virtual city. We're all neighbors
on the World Wide Web and I don't guess I've ever lived in a friendlier
community. I've wondered about that a lot. Why are people you meet
on the web so much friendlier than folks you meet in the real world?
I believe it's because we don't have bodies on the web. We meet
mind to mind. Right at this moment, a person who I met in the real
world would see my old scroungy clothes, that I wear around the
house, notice that I didn't shave this morning, and might react in a
slightly unfriendly manner, but none of those things would matter
to someone I met on the web. When we can't see visual cues, like
the way someone looks, dresses, or their body language, and we
can't hear verbal cues in the way someone talks, the subtle, and
sometimes not so subtle, barriers each of us have built around
ourselves, along with our experientially acquired defenses are
deactivated. We never even think about all the little ways in which
we normally judge the people we meet, or worry in the least about
being judged in the same manner. We're more friendly towards
one another, more sensitive to each others feelings, and less worried
about things that don't really matter anyway. That doesn't mean we
don't need to learn some new social skills mind you. For example
I'm annoyed by people who type everything in capital letters without
stopping to wonder if they're visually impaired and typing that way
to make it easier for them to read their own words. I'm bothered by
people who can't spell well, or who use poor grammar, without
stopping to consider that English might not be their first language
or that they may have a severe learning disability that makes grammar
and spelling very challenging for them. When a person's typing is
all I have to go on, I tend to judge them by that. I've tried very hard
to teach myself not to judge the people I meet on the web in any
way but sometimes I still have to work at it a little.
Now for the bad news. This is my final issue of this publication.
Phil & Clara have, for business related reasons, decided to
discontinue my position as editor of this publication. I expect the
website will continue to exist and the ezine may eventually resume
publication with another editor but this is it for me. Because I enjoy
my work I'll try to find a way to continue doing what I've been
doing. If you've enjoyed my work and would like to follow me, or
at least keep up with whatever I do next, then bookmark my website
now.
http://www.don-guitar.com
and check back every week or so. I'll try to keep my site updated
regularly throughout the coming weeks. If you'd like to be added
to my "Folks to Update" list, leave your email address here, on
my personal feedback form, and type "keep me posted" into the
subject line. Even if all 1900 of you should go to the trouble,
updates will be posted individually by me, not automated or
done in group posts.
http://www.don-guitar.com/contactme.html
Remember, your input is always welcome. We value your suggestions
and advice, and we're always willing to assist you in finding answers to
computer and Internet questions.
Our online feedback form:
http://www.maxpatch.com/fefo.html
If you wish to remain anonymous then use a false email address on
the form (like fake@fake.com) and/or a false name. The form doesn't
access your email client (it's a CGI form), so your privacy is assured.
Your comments, on the form, are delivered to Phil, me (Don Crowder,
the editor) and, where appropriate, may be forwarded to one or more
of our regular contributors.

For as long as I've been writing the ezine I've had a growing list of
friends who've sent me links for the ezine. For this, my final issue,
I didn't take the extra time needed to gather and audit the links
from all my contributors but I want to thank each of the following
people for their friendship, the questions they've helped me answer,
the links they've sent to this ezine, and/or the input they provided in
helping me redesign the maxpatch website.

Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. It's been a good ride
but now it's time to move on. Any of you that don't have an address
for me other than the one I use here at maxpatch, and want to stay
in touch, please drop me a line from the feedback form on my
personal site
http://www.don-guitar.com/contactme.html
and I'll respond from another address which you can save if you like.

My thanks to Phil and Clara McKinney for giving an inexperienced
web geek a job. I hope your business continues to thrive.
I honestly can't say what I'll do next. I didn't know until Monday that
I wouldn't have a job today (Tuesday). I haven't had a lot of time
to research my options under the circumstances. I've been a little
busy with this ezine.
One more time, if any of you readers want to be updated on what
I'll be doing next, just use the feedback form on my personal site,
plug in your email address, and type "keep me posted" into the
subject line.

If I resume publishing an ezine any time in the near future I'll
send you an email and let you know about it. If I'm unable to do
that, I'll delete your address after a few weeks.
Adios y'all
I'll miss you

The most important people on the Internet, for you and I as computer
users, are software developers. The world's coolest computer, without
software, is like a car without fuel. It might look great, but what can it
do? It doesn't matter who produces the software you love and use
regularly, the developers of that software need your support.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Warning . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox:
New computer users are often in awe of the things you can get without
cost on the Internet. There can be hidden costs for the unwary. Use a
"throw away" email address to register, and be constantly on guard
against giving away personal information. Use a firewall, and provide
only the barest minimum of information on questionnaires.
